A whole foods, plant-based diet is the heart-healthiest diet

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world, even though three-quarters of the humans on this planet have no heart disease. Women’s death rate from heart disease is eight times higher than their death rate from breast cancer. The incidence rate (not death rate) for heart disease is about the same as it was in the early 1970s. According to USDA figures, we consume significantly more meat and added fat than we did 30 years ago. Dr. T. Colin Campbell concludes:“The American public is not being given the most up-to-date scientific information. Health institutions in America such as the American Heart Association are intentionally misleading the pubic about heart disease by recommending a diet for heart disease that favors moderation rather than scientific truth. The layperson must be aware that a whole foods, plant-based diet is far and away the healthiest diet, whether scientists, doctors and policy makers think the public will change or not.”

Heart Disease Proved to Be Both Preventable and Reversible

A whole foods, plant-based diet is ultimately more effective and far cheaper than medical intervention because it reduces coronary risk factors such as cholesterol, blood pressure and weight. Beyond prevention, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Jr. and then Dr. Dean Ornish proved that heart disease is reversible with a very low-fat, plant-based diet. Dr. William Castelli, director of the Framingham Heart Study, the nation’s oldest and largest cardiovascular research project, also participated in research on vegetarian and macrobiotic people at Harvard Medical School. He noted they have healthier hearts and circulatory systems than conditioned athletes.

The notion that skin care is a woman’s past time is a myth that needs to be let go. There are many guys out there who take the appearance of their skin very seriously. And why not? Acne affects more men than women and even guys can be very self conscious about their skin’s appearance.

The Reality Of Being A Man

For most men facial and body acne is a reality that they must deal with every day. A guy’s life is often very active and exposes his skin to many pollutants and particles either through the working environment or the rigors of physical activity and sports.

Natural Production of Oil

A man’s body produces a lot of natural oils and even they are susceptible to fluctuations in hormones, especially testosterone. And many guys tend to sweat alot which helps to promote acne breakouts. As guys get older their acne changes from the typical teenage acne with pimples, whiteheads and blackheads to an adult version called Rosacea Acne.

Adult Acne Vs. Teen Acne

Rosacea acne is a redness flushing of the face accompanied with acne but does not include blackheads. Rosacea Acne can be stubborn to treat and is brought on by many factors like alcohol, the sun, stress and physical activity. All of these promote the flushing of the skin and this is what causes the redness and inflammation in the skin’s appearance.

The Male Skin Care Routine

So as more and more men are focusing on how they can stop and get rid of their facial and body acne we need to take a closer look at what’s in their bathroom medicine cabinet and the roles that each of the products play in the man’s skin care routine. For a deeper analysis of male skin care products from shaving gels to exfoliants visit the page Skin Care For Men-What’s In Your Cabinet? Any man who cares enough about his physical health and appearance should take that same enthusiasm and work at getting clear skin that is blemish free. Not every guy has a problem with acne, many guys have a problem with very oily skin, or dry skin that is easily irritated from shaving. In fact, there are many guys out there who still don’t know the proper way to shave to reduce the irritation to the skin and eliminate future breakouts.

Diabetes is a disease whereby the body does not produce insulin or cannot use the insulin it creates effectively. Insulin reduces the amount of glucose in the blood. High glucose levels in the blood are harmful to the body and indicates that the body can’t convert glucose into energy that it needs to function. Consequently diabetics with type 1 diabetes have to monitor their glucose levels and inject insulin into the body to perform this function. Diabetics with type 2 diabetes also have to monitor their condition but don’t have to inject insulin. They might take medication that makes the body more responsive to the insulin that their body creates or simply exercise regularly and eat a specialized diet. As yet there is no cure for diabetes so this treatment and care is a lifelong task. Diabetic supplies are needed to perform this treatment and can become costly over a long time period as they need to be replenished every month or so. This is where Medicare can often help. They can subsidize some of the supplies that are needed. This article will outline some of the supplies needed to treat diabetes and how Medicare helps with the costs of the supplies.

Medicare and Diabetes

Medicare is a Federal health insurance program run by the Health Care Financing Administration of the Department of Health and Human Services. Medicare covers people over 65 and people with disabilities. It comes in two forms : Part A and Part B.

Part A Medicare covers costs like hospital bills, nursing homes and hospices. Most people eligible for Medicare get Part A for no cost.

Part B is concerned with diagnostic and screening tests and medical supplies and equipment. Most people eligible for Medicare have to pay a monthly premium to receive the benefits of Medicare Part B. However in some cases assistance can be given to people that cannot afford the monthly premium.

Screening for diabetes is free under Medicare. You may receive two tests per year for diabetes.

Diabetic testing supplies like a glucose monitor, testing strips and lancets are covered by Part B of Medicare. You pay 20% of the Medicare approved cost for these items. Before you can take advantage of this saving you have to get a certified statement from your health care provider. This can be given to the pharmacy where you get your supplies from along with a Medicare claim.

Training and education on treating diabetes is also covered by Part B. Your health care provider must approve that you need assistance with your management of diabetes. You will pay 20% of the costs of the approved Medicare programs.

Medicare does not cover things like insulin, syringes, insulin pumps or diabetic medication.

Summary

Medicare is aimed at making some of the essential items for diabetes treatment available at a lower cost. It does not cover all the medication and equipment that you need however so be sure to budget for these items. Insulin and Syringes, for example can be picked up on the Internet at very reasonable prices

A defibrillator implant is a tiny device that’s placed in a person’s heart to detect abnormal heartbeats. When a person’s heart beats too quickly or starts to beat erratically, this electronic device sends a power boost to the heart. The energy gives the heart muscle enough strength to get back on track.

Of course we’re not born with a defibrillator. To get a defibrillator implant you have to undergo a two-to-five hour surgery. Generally those who get defibrillator implants have also had heart attacks. For example, Vice President Dick Cheney had a defibrillator placed in his chest after he had a heart attack.

How Does It Work?

A defibrillator implant works like a tiny little computer. Instead of storing articles and financial programs, a defibrillator implant records heartbeats. When it detects and abnormal heartbeat, it kicks in.

Defibrillator implants are made up of two parts, the lead and the generator. The lead checks the heart rhythms and carries energy to the heart when fast or irregular rhythms are detected. The generator is the brains behind the lead. It decides what to do with the rhythms. When it detects irregular beats, it sends the energy through the leads. The “energy” is a battery that’s housed in the generator.

Preparing for a Defibrillator

During your lifetime, you or someone you love might have to get a defibrillator. Getting a defibrillator implant is serious. It’s a surgical procedure that requires a patient to be put under. Many of these surgeries are successful and many defibrillator recipients go on to lead long, healthy lives, but you should discuss this decision with your doctor and family.

If you decide to go ahead with the surgery, prepare yourself to stay in the hospital for a few days. The length of your stay will depend on how well your surgery went, what type of surgery you had and your overall health. After the surgery, you’ll be given a series of tests including blood tests and an EKG. The device itself will also be tested and programmed and your doctor will give you a chest x-ray to make sure the defibrillator is in correctly.

Even though defibrillator implant patients have to stay in the hospital for a few days, they can return to their normal lives fairly quickly after they’re released. It’s recommended that these patients don’t lift anything that’s more than 20 pounds until they’re fully recovered. They’re also not supposed to take a shower for five days. This is a precautionary measure to protect the chest wound.

Staying on Your Toes

Defibrillator implants aren’t perfect and they can malfunction. Unfortunately, there isn’t a 100 percent guarantee that a defibrillator implant is going to work. However, there are some things defibrillator recipients can do to minimize the chance of a malfunction.

Those with defibrillator implants should stay away from electrical devices that have large magnetic fields. This includes certain industrial equipment, power plants and magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs). Though you’ll be OK around a microwave, you should keep cell phones at least six inches away from the device.

Make sure to take care of your defibrillator implant. After all, the whole point of having a defibrillator implant is to increase the quality and longevity of your life.

Acne is the term we use to describe a rash like skin disorder which annoys the heck out of millions of people. There are basically two types of acne, namely non-inflammatory which is the common black heads and white heads type, and the more serious inflammatory variety which manifests itself as papules, pustules and in serious cases as nodules and cysts.

The cause of pimples and acne is a vast subject, with theories ranging from hormones to stress. Some of the causes are hormones, especially during puberty and a woman’s menstrual cycle. Taking Birth control pills and pregnancy, also affect the hormone balances in the body, and can lead to acne outbreaks. Many of the old myths about eating sweets or candy have basically been disproved, but having said that, if eating certain foods seems to lead to an increase in pimples, then it would probably be best to stop eating it.

When treating acne, like many things in life it is better to try and prevent acne outbreaks rather than cure them. Simple habits such as keeping your skin clean, and wearing clean garments, and sleeping in clean bedding can help prevent or reduce acne and pimples. There are also many acne treatments and medications on the market. Getting some good advice from your doctor or pharmacist is always a good starting point, but be aware that a treatment which works for one person may not necessarily work for someone else. Squeezing pimples is generally regarded as a bad idea, as this practice can result in scarring.

Acne is a nasty affliction which does not discriminate between people of different nationalities or backgrounds. Unfortunately some of people are afflicted more severely than others. Acne can be controlled, and the best way to do this is to arm yourself with information about the cause of pimples and the best practices and treatments available to combat this horrible disease. Getting the information, and acting upon it will go a long way to getting a beautiful pimple free skin.

In a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive for Medtronic, Inc., they found that 67 percent of people incorrectly believed a cure existed for type 1 diabetes.

The survey also showed that nearly 80 percent of U.S. adults don’t know the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes develops when the body’s immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells, the only cells that make insulin, a hormone that regulates blood glucose. About 1 million Americans with type 1 diabetes are insulin dependent for survival.

Only half (fifty-one percent) of the survey respondents knew there were two types of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is non-insulin-dependent diabetes. It appears mostly in older adults, but it’s on the rise in younger adults due to the exploding obesity rate in the United States. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90-95% of all diabetes cases in the U.S.

This is particularly disturbing in light of the fact that 90 % of type 2 diabetes can be prevented or reversed but can only happen if people have the knowledge of how to do it.

In the information age it seems appalling to me that so many people are ignorant of this disease which ruins so many lives not only in the United States but throughout the world.

Particularly in the case of diabetes, knowledge is the key to controlling the disease and prevention and reversing the disease as well. The drug companies and medical community needs to step up and do a better job of educating our misinformed public.

Find out more about this terrible disease at the link below for Diabetes. It contains useful information that will help all with this terrible disease.
